Natalie Portman Forgot Taika Waititi Was The Director Of Thor: Love And Thunder

“Have you ever wanted to try your hand at directing a movie?,” the actress asked Waititi, who has directed 7 feature films, including Thor: Love and Thunder, in which Portman appears.
Natalie Portman’s not going to crush Jeopardy anytime soon in the category “Films Directed By Taika Waititi.” During her initial talks with Waititi, Portman forgot that Waititi was a director. Completely memory holed him.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, the Oscar-winner leading actress recalled having a great discussion with Waititi about her amazing fits for the film.
“I thought he was the stylist at first, because he was wearing a leather jumper and a triangle hat in what I can only describe as homeless chic with a touch of coastal grandma. But then his accent made my mistake obvious. He was clearly my dialect coach, right? Right?!” – Natalie Portman
As they discussed her character’s American accent, it dawned on Portman… this guy may just be an obsessed fan or a grip or Kraft services or maybe even the director.
“Waititi said to me, ‘Your character’s the real heart of the film and I can’t wait to capture your transformation’ And I said ‘Great, but my avocado toast and matcha first, then those visions in your head. Bee tee dubs, have you ever wanted to study film, maybe direct one of your own someday?” He said, ‘So much so, I’m directing this one! I’ve even won an Oscar for another.” Portman admitted she had completely forgotten what Waititi looked like or even did for a living.
For the record, Waititi directed Thor: Ragnorok, Jojo Rabbit, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do in the Shadows, and several others including most recently Thor: Love and Thunder. While none of them, barring Ragnorak and Love and Thunder, have set the box office on fire, Waititi has become one of the freshest writer/directors to come out of New Zealand since Sir Peter Jackson, who Portman also admits to not being able to pick out of a lineup.
“I’m just glad we cleared that up as I’d hate for Taika to think I hadn’t done my homework for this project. Although, gotta be honest, I’ve got so much human growth hormone in me, I barely remember my own name… but these guns are worth it, baby.” – Natalie Portman
