Mandalorian Actors Cry Foul Over Lack of Diversity

Costume designer Shawna Trpcic is coming under fire this week over complaints from cast members on the set of Disney Plus’ hit show The Mandalorian. The outcry is reportedly over lack of diversity in costumes on set. Trpcic joined The Mandalorian in 2020 after the sudden departure of original designer Joseph A. Porro.

Porro, whose costume designs were used in the early part of season 2, left the show after the production suffered extensive budget cuts. Trpcic took the reins early this year and claimed that she could “make it work” on the limited budget.

Carano in the one and only outfit Cara Dune owns

Actors Gina Carano (Cara Dune) and Carl Weathers (Greef Karga) were said to have stormed off set recently after complaining to show producer Jon Favreau about their costumes. Carano was disgusted with the lack of diversity in the new season’s costumes. FakingStarWars has contacted Carano directly for a statement about the situation.

“I’m annoyed with theses costumes on the show! I want to dress in something different.” Carano said. “I get why Mando would wear the same thing all the time, his character lives in a tin can out in space! But my character lives on a planet and somehow doesn’t have more than one outfit?! Ridiculous! I may be tough, but I’m still a woman for crying out loud. I need more than one look. I’ve even offered to bring in some of my own personal wardrobe. Pretty sure the writers can make MMA t-shirts and MAGA hats work…hell, that’s where all the money’s going anyway. Let’s make them earn their keep.”

FakingStarWars has looked into these claims, and while the costumes have a slight variation, the outfits do appear to be near identical in every episode.

Weathers was disenfranchised with the costumes for the smell coming off the costumes. “I’ve worn the same costume since season 1 and they never wash it,” Weathers stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Being on these desert planets gets hot, and you sweat. I’ve worn the same sweat-filled costume I had in the first season. They tried dyeing the costume to make it look different, but never washed the damn thing!”

Beloved “Baby Yoda” AKA The Child was also upset with this decision. An extra on set filmed the actor and placed it on TikTok. The video shows The Child throwing a cup of spotchka at an assistant yelling “I’m not a cartoon character! You can’t dress me in the same damn thing every episode, I’m not Bart Simpson!” The video has gone viral overnight. The Child has since “apologized” on Twitter claiming he was “Joking”.

Show producer Jon Favreau recently told Eonline.com that certain budgets needed to be cut to make up for the expenses of the incredible CGI in the show. FakingStarWars will continue to look into these claims and keep you updated.
